how do you set a world record?

It’s a lengthy process to prove you’re the best.

1. You first need to decide what record you want to break, but if you aren’t seeing one you are interested in or perhaps you have an extremely niche talent to record - you can submit your own idea!

2. Once you decide, you need to apply to attempt to break the record *officially.* You then wait to get approved (current wait time is 16 weeks!) and then receive the guidelines to record and hopefully break that record.

3. After practicing and nailing your skill, you have to set up the logistics for the formal and hopefully record-breaking attempt. Many tries are rejected after not being properly documented, or adhering to specific record guidelines. For the official record attempt you need witnesses, specialists, a photographer, videographer, and all necessary equipment to carry out your record. To gain traction at your event you can even try to invite Guinness World Record adjudicators (which apparently makes it an even bigger deal!).

4. Once you nail it (fingers crossed!), you submit all of your evidence to Guinness staff and await approval in order to get your certificate in the mail.

With over 30,000 record categories, people get pretty specific in their talents - you might find that you yourself could try to qualify for some! My personal favorites were the longest human tunnel traveled through by a skateboarding dog (his name is Otto) and the longest duration a basketball was spun on a toothbrush by Sandeep Singh Kaila.
