what’s the role of a ‘ghostwriter’?

You bring the ideas, I bring the pen.

Ghostwriters are hired by people who need or want something published either to spread knowledge, gain publication credit, etc. This role requires more than just the physical writing though. A ghostwriter needs to fill in the gaps as well to make the piece compelling and sellable as someone else’s voice. This includes research, connecting with the ‘author,’ interviewing, and often knowing how or where to publish.

This type of work also requires the writer to be a chameleon of sorts so that they can adapt their writing style to the voice of the people they are crediting. See it as an exchange of goods; the credited person brings the idea and (potential) credibility, the ghostwriter brings the skill of language and time to write a compelling piece to match.
