who invented QR codes?
While QR codes came into existence 25 years ago, we now see them everywhere with the increasingly touchless world. Even more recently, they have been replacing headstone information on graves.
QR codes can contain and convey 200x more information than a barcode.
QR codes convey information both side-to-side and up-and-down (2D) versus a barcode that works one dimensionally. The size and amount of “modules” (the little squares that make up each code) is dependent on how much information the code needs to carry.
Hara Masahiro, an engineer at Denso Wave, invented the QR code concept that stands for “quick response,” after running into organizational problems at work where employees would have to scan multiple barcodes on singular items.
Here’s a video explaining the actual coding process in the creation of a QR code.
