what is xanthophyll?

plant protectors unite!

Xanthophyll is a type of carotenoid, which is a class of pigments found in plants, algae, and some bacteria.

These pigments are responsible for the yellow, orange, and red colors seen in many fruits, vegetables, and autumn leaves. Xanthophylls, specifically, are yellow pigments and play a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis by protecting the plant's chlorophyll from excessive sunlight, which can cause damage.

The most common xanthophylls include lutein, zeaxanthin, and neoxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly important for human health, as they are found in high concentrations in the retina of the eye, where they help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by filtering harmful blue light and acting as antioxidants.
