what is the difference between anime and manga?
Manga is to comics what anime is to cartoons.
The difference between manga and anime is essentially in presentation. Both are Japanese styles of design that contain exaggerated facial features, bright colors or bold design, and tend to live in the world of fantasy and/or science fiction. The main difference is that anime (much like the name sounds) is animated and exists on the screen while manga is a type of graphic novel that exists on the page. Think cartoons vs comics - one can be made into the other but they are still different in nature and consumption.
Since manga is printed, you tend to see it in black and white and also published at a much faster rate. Manga also tends to have more intricate or inventive story lines because of both how many people can create and publish it.
